Who Would Have Thought?????
This past Labor Day weekend, while at our cottage, we took a little trip to Huron National Forest. Our first stop was at Iargo Springs Interpretive Site. What a spectacular panoramic view of the Au Sable River!!! We climbed down many, many steps (like 300 +!!) and came upon the most beautiful scenery. I know Michigan has many beautiful sights, but this is the first time we've been to this particular spot. I must say it was breathtaking and the absolute highlight of our weekend. (. . . and then we had to climb back up those dang blasted 300+ steps huffing and puffing and swearing we need to diet!!)
Our next stop was to Canoers' Memorial. The Rifle and Au Sable Rivers are excellent canoeing rivers. We try to canoe or kayak the Rifle River (closer to our cottage) at least once a year. Of course, my favorite time to canoe or kayak is in the fall. The colors are so vibrant, the air crisp and the river not as crowded. There was a scenic lookout here and a monument to fallen canoers - so our youngest climbed the memorial : ) , what else is it for when you're 13?
Michigan, prior to being known for the automotive industry, was known for it's logging/lumber of the great white pines. The rivers near our cottage are the Rifle and Au Sable Rivers. These rivers, along with the many other rivers in Michigan, are all part of "logging history!!" We stopped at the Lumberman's Monument - - but of course, by then we had run out of batteries for our digital camera (those things sure do eat the batteries, don't they?). . . . . So now we have an excuse to go back again in a few weeks to see the color changes, now don't we? Fall. . . it's my favorite time of the year. We are planning on taking a Two-Hour fall color tour on the AuSable River aboard a two level Paddlewheel River Boat. Again, another first for us!! Oh, I can already feel it . . . hot apple cider, sweatshirts/sweaters and that beautiful, beautiful Michigan color!!

Your pictures are great. We were just at my parents cottage in the Upper Pennisula. There is nothing better then spending the summer there. We went to Hawaii this summer on a cruise and some of the shoreline reminded us of Michigan.
Are you close to Oscado, my husband was stationed there way back when the air force was open.

Gorgeous views. We loved our stay in the Mackinaw area and visited Mackinac Island, last year.
Five years ago, my husband and I visited Split Rock Lighthouse, Lake Superior (MN). We walked down to the shore so we could see the lighthouse way up on the bluff...what fun and how wonderful....until we started the approximate 2 mile climb back up to the lighthouse. Whew!!! Don't think either of us would be able to do that today. It's a happy memory though!
