Oh Boy, Where Do I Start?????
Well, we were initially delayed in Detroit on Valentine’s Day prior to take off for our nightmare vacation. I called my dad from the plane to let him know we were delayed and perhaps he would like to leave to pick us up an hour or so later than he planned. I found him home, sick, very sick. He had already sent my mom and her friend to pick us up from the airport. That should have been my first clue to get off the plane!
We arrived in Florida, drove to mom and dad’s place to find my dad sick, very sick. Both ends sick, um, yeah. Mom doesn’t drive, much. But she tells me how to drive. Always. So I had to drive her to Wal-Mart to get some things for my dad. Like Vernors and Pepto-Bismol. Sunday Dad still wasn’t feeling too well to do anything.
Sunday night it just kept getting better. . . I woke to hear someone sick in the bathroom. Thinking it was my dad; I got up and asked if he was alright. It was my mom. She wasn’t alright. . . now I’ll speed this up. She got sick and sicker, we had to drag her (unwillingly) to the hospital on Monday morning, NO ONE at the Emergency Room desk to greet us. Can you believe this? I called her Doctor. Took her to her office. Doctor admitted her to a different hospital. Thank God!! Mom was in the hospital for 4 days. They gave her the wrong IV. They gave her an IV for a Diabetic. My mom is not a diabetic. Her blood sugar is 93 and it was up to 178!!!
Wednesday, our youngest daughter who accompanied me on this nightmare vacation got sick. Wednesday night, I went to take a shower, got sick and passed out; hit my head and who knows what else. Um yeah. Dad panicked called 911. I, in no way, was going to any hospital in Florida!!! No way, no how. The ambulance, fire truck and various technicians showed up. No thanks. I sent them on their way to find another victim. Of course, this gave the senior community some entertainment and we had approximately 500 in the streets wondering what was going on. Dad and I were up all night caring for my youngest. I did laundry all . . . night. . . . long. . . on and off. . . um yeah!! I cleaned up after dad, mom, our youngest and myself. Um yeah!!
Friday, after mom was released, we headed home. Praise the Lord!!!
I’m kidding folks. I do Praise the Lord! I’m very thankful He willed this to happen as it did. I was certainly needed in Florida to help my parents. My mom needed me to help with dad and dad needed me to help with mom. My mom is stubborn and it really did take two of us to get her to go to the hospital. She was dehydrating FAST and the elderly can die quickly from the flu if not treated. My youngest and I got our turn too so we won’t, hopefully, pass this on to my hubby and our oldest daughter back in Michigan. I also had a wonderful opportunity to talk individually, and then together, with my parents about the necessity of them learning how to do things independently. Like my mom can drive and she needs to do it a little more often. My dad needs to learn how to operate the washing machine. . . so if something happens to my mom he can have um like. . . clean underwear! You know that kind of talk, those kinds of things. They were receptive. They understood the necessity. The child becoming the parent. . . the parent becoming the child.
. . . and as bad of shape that Michigan may be in right now I LOVE IT AND AM SO GLAD TO BE HOME. It gets cold here. Cold to kill the germs and viruses. Not like Florida where it’s warm and humid and they just multiply and multiply. It’s cold and sunny and beautiful here today and I thank God He’s placed me right where I am. Thank you Jesus for taking care of all the tiny details last week for us and thank you for bringing us home safe, healthy and happy.
Sorry, I have no wonderful vacation pictures to share. I didn’t take a one. I also instructed our youngest daughter in the 9th grade, that if in English class she has to write a paper on what she did on her Winter Vacation. . . to make something up. I don’t think anyone would believe her LOL.
Blessings. . . until next time,

oh that does sound awful! Sorry you had such a misrable trip. I bet you are glad to be home!
Sher...dear Sher..*hugs*
What was that all about you must be wondering? You were most certainly needed in Florida thats for sure. Its too bad it all happened but the timing was perfect for you to help your parents. I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself more than you did and you were at least strong enough if though you were sick to look after everyone else.
I hope no one else in the senior's complex got that nasty thing.
Well...you're right about the cold weather helping to kill some germs....just keep warm and thank goodness thats behind you.
I'm sure there is another nice vacation break on its way for you.
Judi
Oh my sweet friend I am so sorry, but I am thankful you were there for your father and mom.
I truly know how hard it is. You know it was our Christmas vacation when mom had her strokes. You know she never even knew what she got and had no Christmas.I still can't believe my last holiday with her was like this. I beat myself up now for not going Thanksgiving.
I am glad you are safe and were not hurt worse from the fall.
Oh my goodness! You poor thing. But GOOD ATTITUDE! You needed to be there for your folks. The Lord works in mysterious ways doesn't he? (The fact that you and the paramedics were the highlight of 500 senior's evening was just a little bonus!)
You know, sometimes it's a little hard to find the rainbow because of all the rain.
But you are home, and now you have your next trip there to look forward to, cause it can't go wrong twice in a row.
Go take a walk in the snow. Enjoy!
Welcome home! Karen
I'm sorry to hear you had such a miserable vacation Sher. I hope everyone is well, by now!
Wow that really was a nightmare vacation! Just when I thought it couldn't get worse...you mentioned something else that happened. Glad, you and everyone survived!!
Glad you're OK...and everyone else is on the mend, too. What a way to spend a warm vacation! Welcome back home!!!
;-)
God does work in mysterious ways, doesn't He, Sher...He had to make you think you were going to have a nice, warm, sunny vacation to get you to Florida to help your parents with their uproars & downpours (that's what I call it)..
and it sounds like you are a little stubborn like your mom about going to the hospital...LOL
I'm happy to hear all is over & you're home now. ;-) Bo
Hi Sher,
Bless your soul. Vacation??? Ha-ha! I am glad you were there though, to help them through it. Did they get flu shots this year? I'm really curious because my mom opted not to. But then I hear stories where people still get the flu even with the shot.
Your new shower set-up and "Hazel" are both amazing. Who knew that the "Jetson's" life-style would come true in our lifetime. : )
Oh Sher....! I'm so glad everyone is back to health! Alright, your story guilted me into stopping all this moaning about winter weather and to give thanks that I'm not living in a sunny, hot den of germs! Hopefully, your story will stay with me each and every day until the thermometer goes above 40!
Welcome Home! We missed ya!
Judi

Oh my, I am so sorry that everyone was sick. But I know you were glad to be there for your parents being sick. I am glad you are home.
Wow, what a "vacation"! But you know, I am a BIG believer that things happen for a reason. You were mean't to be there for your parents. Hopefully they are doing much better now!
Sometimes the Lord has us in places at just the right time and it isn't always the most pleasant! I would say that you and your daughter just went on a mission trip! People get sick on the mission field also.
I am glad you are home. At least you had a change in scenery! You are such a good daughter to take care of your parents. Well done!
Hugs,
Cheryl
Hey Sher with an S.....
Thanks for letting me know I'm NOT alone in the not-so-romantic-hubby category! Eh...like you said...it's not that BIG of a deal. But, it makes for good stories sometimes!
As for why I am Judi with an "i"...
my mother said "her name is Judith, it is spelled J-u-d-I-t-h, not J-u-d-y-th!" As far as she was concerned those people who spelled it with a "Y" were 100% wrong. It agitated the h*ll out of her when I went to school and everyone ("even the teachers!" she would huff!) spelled it with a "Y". Funny...isn't it?
Have a great weekend! Hope the weather improves! We're having warmer temps (for the moment!) but lots of rain!
Judi
So sorry to hear that everyone was so sick on your trip. I totally understand the "parent becoming the child and the child becoming the parent"... Be well!
That was truely an ordeal! I am so glad that my parents sold their place in Florida and moved back to Pa. You really need the cold to kill those germs. Catching up on your other posts, so I know that you are feeling much better. I am going to try the chicken and dumplings recipe.
♥, Susan
